Political activist, pastor and renowned author Dr Benson Rubusana was honoured for his contribution to the political struggle on Friday.
Eastern Cape Provincial Government with the Buffalo City Metro Municipality honoured the life of Dr Rubusana by unveiling his statue outside the East London City Hall.
Speaking at the ceremony, Buffalo City Metro Executive Mayor Xola Pakati described Dr Rubusana as a true icon of the struggle and a christian who was committed to creating a South Africa where all could live freely. With all the opportunity to explore their true potential. He said the statue occupies a central place in the city and is the centre of attention.
“This statue occupies a central place in our town and is thus a centre of attention. We have decided to place this memorial in an area that has easy access for the people of the city and tourists. This is not only the busiest area in our city but also the official seat of the political leadership of the city, said Pakati.”
One of Dr Rubusana’s grandchildren Vusumzi Rubusana said his grandfather’s work was mainly based in East London and the family is grateful for the vision to have the statue outside the city hall. He urged the public to stop vandalising statues and other government structures as they represent the deep history of South Africa.
“I urge the public to stop vandalising statues not only for this one but all government structures as they will provide history for the generations to come, he said.”
Eastern Cape Economic Developments, Environmental Affairs and Tourism MEC Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane said, the government should not just celebrate and remember Rubusana but make East London a tourist destination.
The ceremony was attended by church leaders, political leaders, Eastern Cape Provincial officials, Dr Rubusana’s family and local residents.
