Mabuyane donates R11M to EC universities

Eastern Cape government donated R11 million to the University of Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu University to clear students debts.

Premier Oscar Mabuyane said the money is a response to the students’ challenges and will assist settle debts so they receive their certificates.

“These two universities cater for students from quintal one, two and three, schools that are known as the no-fee schools for children from disadvantaged backgrounds,” said Mabuyane.

In-addition Mabuyane said 300 students will benefit from this donation. Those who have not registered will get a chance to register and complete their studies.

“We plead with young people to use this opportunity wisely as their success is the future of the nation,” he said.

UFH Student Representative Council President Sipiwo Ngcenge said they welcome the Premier’s great initiative, not every leader able to make such fulfilling decisions under such circumstances.

“As we speak there are students who have completed their studies but are unable to get certificates because of their financial problems,” he said.

According to Ngcenge, the donation brought back hope and opened gates at a societal level as these students are perceived to be people who will transform their communities.

“We will ensure that the money is distributed to the rightful beneficiaries so that our students receive their certificates,” he said.
