As the country is bracing itself for the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Buffalo City Metro has issued a stern warning to its residents who do not want to adhere to Covid-19 regulations.

This after a recent rise in fatalities, active positive cases and the official identification of Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu Universities as hotspot areas in the metro.

Buffalo City Metro Spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said the BCM COVID-19 command Council has urged people to adhere to Covid-19 regulations as the fight against the Coronavirus is not yet won.

“Whilst progress has been made in fighting the virus the Command Center cautions people of the possibility of a second wave as we are not out of the woods yet,” said Ngwenya.

Ngwenya has confirmed that in level one Alert of the COVID-19 regulations the number of deaths due to COVID-19 related illnesses in the Metro has increased.

“After a consistent decline in Covid-19 fatalities, the number of people that have died from the virus has moved from 699 since the last update to 900,” he said.

Ngwenya has urged businesses in the Metro to exercise caution in their premises.

“We call upon alcohol selling establishments to adhere to all the strict Disaster Management Act regulations and businesses to exercise caution, ensure that staff and customers wear their masks and that they screen everyone and enforce social distance,” said Ngwenya.

He added that people must not hesitate to report transgressors to law enforcement officials in the metro.

“We further call on the people of Buffalo City not to compromise on their safety and alert law enforcement authorities whenever there are transgressions,” said Ngwenya.
