It is alleged that Post Office consultants keep unemployment grants in their own pockets.
According to one of the beneficiaries who wanted to remain unidentified, she had received an SMS instructing her to collect her R350 from the nearest Post Office and upon arrival, she was shocked to find out that there was no money transferred to her.
“The consultant asked for my ID document, after a few seconds he returned it and said there was no money transferred and should go home,” she said.
After the consultant returned her ID, anonymous showed him the SMS as proof that she was instructed to go fetch her R350 and demanded an explanation as to why she could not receive her grant.
“He told me that I am causing a scene and I should leave and he does not know why I did not receive money,” she said.
She added that she decided to look at another lady’s SMS after the other consultant attended to her and saw that the messages were the same.
“I went back and confronted the consultant and asked him how is it possible that the other lady received her money and I did not but we have the same message the consultant laughed,” said Anonymous.
When the consultant saw that the commotion was starting to draw people’s attention, Anonymous said the consultant laughed and gave her money.
Eastern Cape Department of Social Development Spokesperson Lufefe Mkutu said the department will look into the matter.
He added that If the allegations are true and there is evidence to support the claims, they ask the public to bring it forward.
“We will also engage with SASSA to also look into the matter,” said Mkutu.
