To assist community members Sivuyile Tinta serves warm meals in his Silango Soup Kitchen in Mdantsane.

According to Tinta, the soup kitchen is for 17 chronic and HIV positive members of the community. The initiative is based in unit three at Tinta’s home.

He added that the most vulnerable members of the community benefit from this initiative.

“We have noticed not everyone received food parcels last for a month. We want to have a lasting impact in making lives better one meal at a time,” he said.

The soup kitchen serves samp and beans, steam bread, hot soup with vegetables, pap, rice, soup with mincemeat and vegetables.

One of the beneficiaries Sonwabiso Mancapa who lives with Diabetes said the soup kitchen helped him a lot as he no longer takes his medication on an empty stomach.

“Now I am more active and I feel much better now. I am forever grateful to the Silango Soup Kitchen,” said Mancapa.

To ensure that the lockdown regulations are followed, Tinta conveyed that they submit the number of beneficiaries who will be served specifically on the day to the police station.

“We tell them our numbers for the day and also our members come with their masks and they observe social distancing regulations and wash their hands on running water.

The soup kitchen operates twice a week Tuesday and Thursdays.
