Eastern Cape Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe has urged motorists to act responsibly and not to drink and drive following a number of road accidents that occurred over the weekend in various parts of the province.
According to the statement released by the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, three people died when two vehicles collided at the robots on the Zwelitsha and Bhisho intersection over the weekend, empty alcohol bottles were found in the vehicle.
“The three died on the scene of the crash, two from the Polo and one from the Mercedes Benz. Six other people have been rushed to the hospital for medical care. It is still unclear how the incident occurred and local authorities are still investigating.”
TMEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe has conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the deceased families.
“Sadly, all the incidents that occurred over the weekend could have been avoided. As we always say vehicle crashes on our roads are mainly exacerbated by human error,” said Tikana-Gxothiwe.
Tikana-Gxothiwe revealed that traffic law enforcement will work tirelessly to ensure that the transgressors are held accountable for their reckless behaviour on the roads.
“Traffic Law Enforcement will be stepped up in this regard as the Province has noted a spike in this type of offence since the country moved to Level 2 of the Lockdown regulations,” said Tikana-Gxothiwe.
