Several crèches in Southernwood have been fined by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and Department of Social Development for not complying with the bylaws of operating Early Childhood Development Centres. This is after two children lost their lives in one of the crèches in Southernwood.
According to the BCMM Spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya, they are conducting an operation to look into the state of safety in Childhood Care Centres particularly in Southernwood.
“We want to make sure that we bring these childhood care Centres to book. We make it to ensure that they comply with regulations. In our first operation, we were refused entry, we activated our law enforcement and we established entry to inspect the premises. We will be leaving no stone unturned,” he said.
Furthermore, Ngwenya said for crèches to continue operating they need to be registered, comply with the bylaws in terms of our city planning issues of fire.
“Already what we have found on one of the crèche’s we have inspected so far is one of the transgressions in as far as the number of children, nutrition is given to children, mattresses, hygiene issues as well as point of exit in case of emergencies,” said Ngwenya.
He added that the crèche who is at fault has been fined and given notices to rectify their irregularities.
“The operation safety standards in Childhood Care Centre will spread throughout the metro during October,” he said.
