While the Metro is dealing with a water shortage, criminal behaviours appear to be contributing to the problem. Buffalo City Metro Spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya pleaded with Buffalo City residents to report persons who steal water meters as they affect the city.
The pleading came after a man was sentenced to 15 years in prison in an East London court yesterday for stealing three water meters.
“We applaud the actions of the South African Police Services (SAPS) in East London Fleet Street, as well as our Law Enforcement Services and Red Alert, in ensuring that justice is served. We hope that the punishment sends a strong message to everyone and demonstrates the severity of the situation,” said Ngwenya.
Further, Ngwenya said the city’s Superintendent and Peace Officer apprehended the convicted male at the Chiselhurst Water Works Facility in May this year. He went on to say that the defendant had stolen three water meters in Southernwood, but that this was not the first time he had broken the law.
“The sad part is that the convicted male confirmed that he would have profited R25 from selling one water meter which he would use to purchase drugs, whilst replacing a single water meter would have cost the city more than R20 000.”
Ngwenya added that this tampering, damage and theft of key service infrastructure which occurred in a business area had serious consequences for homes and companies who were unable to operate because there was no water.
“We want to see more prosecution of such illegal acts, and we’re urging Buffalo City residents to help us catch these criminals by reporting them to 082 566 2553 or calling our call centre number at 086 111 3017.”
