Being unemployed was not the end of world for Computer Scientist and businessman Mduduzi Zulu, 33, from starting his own Mobile Butchery business which operates at East London’s hotspot Ebuhlanti during the weekends.
Speaking to Buffalo City Metro News Zulu said the Mobile Butchery came as an idea when he went to Ebuhlanti as he is originally from Johannesburg.
“How I thought about the idea is when I first came to East London and I went to Ebuhlanti, I saw that there’s a gap in the market and that everyone who braais there brings their own meat and then I asked a friend of mine why don’t we bring meat to Ebuhlanti,” said Zulu.
When he visited East London again he still saw the gap and thought to himself that everything seems to be mobile why not create a Mobile Butchery.
The Mobile Butchery business according to Zulu is doing well at Ebuhlanti on weekends and he added that if it were to do so during the week the profit would be enough to feed a family.
Adding to their services the Mobile Butchery introduced a buy, braai and a free delivery within a 5 km radius and people are making orders especially those who have seen and tasted the meat.
“We have our products, We make our own wors and there’s a pig farm in Butterworth which supplies us with our meat. The beef and the chicken we still get them at your local suppliers, as for the wings people love them and we have our own secret sauce,” said Zulu.
In terms of advertising his business Zulu uses social media as the main platform, utilises word of mouth, distributes pamphlets and has plans of putting up ads on billboards. “The pamphlets work as coupons so if a person returns the pamphlet that person will receive a 10 percent discount.”
When asked about the future of the business he said they want to have a mobile butchery in King Williams Town and from there venture out to all South Africa’s hotpots and to one day supply meat to other mobile butcheries.
Zulu encouraged all unemployed graduates to take advantage of any opportunities provided by the universe and must not be scared to start small.
