Buffalo City residents allege that food parcels are being unfairly distributed by ward committees.
A resident from Unit P Nwabisa Msengana said she did not receive any food parcels as they claim that she has money because she recently painted her house.
She added that the ward committee distributes food during the night to people they only have relations with and their family members.
“When I asked why haven’t I received any food parcels, the lady said I have money because my house is painted,” she said.
Buffalo City Spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said reports of complaints related to the compilation of the recipients’ lists have been noted.
“The Municipality through it’s Council Speaker has met with affected ward councillors and resolved such cases in the 14 wards where there were complaints,” he said.
A source who wanted to remain Anonymous from Mdantsane Nu13 said when ward committee members were compiling the list of names they skipped her because her house has a flat and she owns a car.
She expressed that when she questioned why she was not added to the list there was no clear response.
“They look at our houses and what we own and say and conclude that we have enough money to sustain ourselves but then they don’t know our struggles. Regardless of our houses, we are also hungry like everybody else,” said Anonymous.
To report fraud, manipulation and corruption on the distribution of food vouchers, residents are urged to contact the municipalities Hotline – 080 066 8413.
