“The examinations will be merged with the November examinations.” These were the words of the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga.
According to Motshekga, a decision was taken to postpone the May/June Matric rewrite examinations.
She said the exams were due to be written by more than three hundred and fifty thousand (350 000) mainly part-time candidates, from the fourth of May and conclude on June 26 2020.
“Due to the lockdown, we have not been able to complete our preparations, which include the printing and distribution of questions papers, the appointment of invigilators, markers, and the general readiness in marking centres,” she said.
According to Motshegkga, a new timetable for the merged examinations will be communicated urgently, as part of preparing the system for the biggest matric examination ever seen in the country.
“We estimate that one million and one-hundred thousand candidates, will sit for the end-of-year Matric examinations in this merged format,” she said.
In-addition Motshekga said this includes the Amended Senior Certificate and National Senior Certificate.
One of the people who wanted to improve their results Kathleen Haneke said she was looking forward to improving her Maths Literacy, Economics and Business Studies.
“I was looking forward to the first step of changing my life to how I have always imagined it to be and rewriting my matric was going to help me get there but since the pandemic outbreak, I have lost a bit of hope, I feel very discouraged,” she said.
