After struggling to continue with his studies due to having insufficient funds at Boston House of Media, Yanga Mabokela now broadcasts for uMhlobo Wenene FM, one of the biggest radio stations in South Africa.
According to Mabokela, he cannot explain his feelings.
“Right now I can’t even explain the feeling, I’m super excited but nervous at the same time,” he said,” he said.
The Mdantsane born and raised radio presenter attended Embekweni Primary School and Qaqamba Senior Secondary School then went to Johannesburg to further his studies at Boston Media House in Radio Broadcasting but could not continue in the second year.
“I could not further my studies because my mother didn’t have money to pay for my tuition,” said Mabokela.
The Comedian/Event Master of Ceremonies (MC) who goes by his stage name Yarees volunteered at Mdantsane FM for five years.
“I worked at Mdantsane FM for 5 years, it is one of the biggest community radio stations in the metro so I knew being part of the station will give me a great chance to showcase my skill,” he said.
According to Mabokela working for a community radio station had its own challenges but because he knew the main goal he did not give up.
“Like any other community radio, I was a volunteer, sometimes I didn’t have money to go present my show,” said Mabokela.
When asked by BCM News about what Mdantsane FM has taught him, he said to use the platform to learn everything.
“To focus on yourself, do it for you and to use the platform to learn everything because such opportunities are rare,” he said.
Mdantsane FM Station Manager Xabiso Gqirana said for any presenter that gets recognized and recruited by a national radio station is an ultimate fulfilment for him and for Mdantsane FM as a grooming institution.
“It only means that we’re doing our job in contributing towards the development of our staff and community, and one thing I make sure I do not do is to be selfish and try to delay God’s plan for someone.”
Xabiso Gqirana wished Mabokela all the best in his future endeavours.
“To Yareez, I would simply say to him just be you, do you and always respect listeners and people knowing that you are who you are because of others. May God be with you,” said Gqirana.
Mabokela’s show ‘Jaiva Mzansi’ airs on Fridays and Saturdays from 22:00 pm to 01:00 am on uMhlobo Wenene FM.
