The Eastern Cape Department of Transport is in a bid to tighten it’s road regulations during the festive season.
This is after 26 people lost their lives while more sustained injuries from 17 road accidents over the Black Friday weekend across the Eastern Cape.
According to DOT MEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe the law enforcement officers will be out in full force with the expected high traffic volumes.
“We are gearing up for what promises to be a very busy Festive Season on the road as many will be heading home for the first time since the pre-Easter Holidays lockdown,” said Tikana-Gxothiwe.
The MEC described the weekend’s road fatalities as a reminder that driver behaviour can be a difference between life and death on our roads.
“The fact that we have lost so many of our people, most of – at the prime of their lives is something of great concern to me. And the fact that so many died from head-on collisions which by their nature point to reckless and negligent driving is of even greater concern.”
“We are calling on our road users, passengers, pedestrians and drivers alike to work with our officers and respect the rules of the road at all times,” pleaded Tikana-Gxothiwe.
