A plea to the community to donate blankets, food and clothes after assessing the damage caused by a fire at Mzamomhle Informal Settlement in the Buffalo City Metro Municipality.
Many families have lost their belongings and are left homeless following a fire that broke out in one of the shacks on Monday. Buffalo City Metro Spokesperson Sam Ngwenya said the metro is organising donations to help the affected.
“Thirty-eight (38) shacks so far have been destroyed, we are still tallying the number of affected people. There are no fatalities and no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is currently unknown,” said Ngwenya.
He said the municipality is organising donations for victims and that they have already donated about 120 blankets.
“We are organising donations for blankets for those that will be spending the night at Mzamomhle Community Hall. So far, we have issued 120 blankets and the ward councillor is still busy with the primary assessment to add to people who were not on the list for Social Development Relief,” he said.
He further said that they would appreciate any form of a donation from the public.
“Currently, Department of Social Development is on-site, our disaster management is liaising with other government departments for documentation.”
Ngwenya applauded those who have donated to the victims.
“We are still dealing with catering donations from Spar and we are grateful to the organizations that have reached out and we would appreciate any donations to assist the fire victims,” said Ngwenya.
