The Deputy Speaker of the Eastern Cape Legislature Mlibo Qoboshiyane was part of a group of angry people who were picketing outside the East London Magistrate court for the denial of Ayanda Matika’s bail.
This is after Matika was charged for allegedly murdering his girlfriend Busisiwe Ngwadla on February 26, at Emerald Sky Amalinda.
According to Qoboshiyane, buying gifts for women does not give men the right to treat them as objects however women must be treated with respect and dignity.
Mlibo pleaded with men to protect defenceless women. “As men we should come together to give love to women and children who cannot protect themselves against abusive men. No woman deserves to die in the hands of a man that claims to love her.”
The deputy speaker said incidents like these are not supposed to happen in a country like South Africa, therefore government has no reason not to give comfort to women who are abused in the name of love.
Speaking to BCM news, Qoboshiyane said the brutal murdering of women violates human rights and it gives men a bad name and it must stop.
Princess Faku of the Young Women’s Desk in the Eastern Cape Legislature said, they are willing to give support to the family of the deceased and want the accused to be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Matika made a brief court appearance at the East London Magistrate court yesterday and without pleading bail, his case was postponed to the 15th of May.
