The South African Social Security Agency increased the Child Support Grant and Grant-in-aid today.
The increase was announced by the Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni during his budget speech earlier this year.
According to the Eastern Cape SASSA Spokesperson Luzuko Qina, the Child Support Grant and Grant-in-aid increased to R430 to try and circumvent the challenge of the declining economy so that children have better lives.
“We therefore want to make them aware that the full value of the grant is R430,” said Qina.
One of SASSA’s beneficiaries Khayakazi Xuba who has a six-year-old child expressed that R430 is not enough to provide for a child, especially with the increased VAT.
“R430 only covers the basic needs of a child. A child needs a school uniform, food and money to go to the doctors, the money is not enough,” she said.
