Chris Hani Health Care Clinic at Nompumelelo in Beacon Bay was burgled, medication and electrical appliances were stolen.
According to Caption Hazel Mqala, two suspects were detained on April 15. Medicine and electrical appliances were stolen and nobody was injured.
She added that COVID-19 operations commenced immediately when the lockdown began.
“The Crime Prevention Unit has been deployed to visit and patrol government buildings such as Clinics, Libraries and Schools, especially where the housebreaking is prevalent. Beacon Bay Central, Nompumelelo and Ducats being our focus areas,” said Mqala.
Mqala expressed that members will keep a record of these visits and the station commander, visible police and the relief commander will be monitoring the patrols.
One of the residents who wanted to remain anonymous said when she arrived at the clinic around eight in the morning yesterday she was told that the clinic was still closed
“I was going to do my monthly check-up when I arrived at the clinic again around 12 pm, I saw nurses standing outside and police were all over the place when I asked, the nurse said the clinic was broken into, computers and medication were stolen,” said Anonymous.
In a statement released in the President’s Desk, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that it is despicable that criminals are using this period of the lockdown as a cover to break the law at a time when the law-enforcement authorities are occupied with the national effort to contain the pandemic.
“Public property is being vandalised while the entire country is experiencing hardship because of the lockdown, this demonstration of utter disrespect and disregard for the majority of South Africans who are law-abiding,” he said.
