Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders and the Provincial Health Department has warned the public to refrain from drinking hand sanitizers as they contain unprocessed and dangerous alcohol.
This is after some villagers were accused of consuming the substance to quench their thirst.
Speaking at the House of Traditional Leaders in Bhisho last week, an official of the Department of Health Dr Nozipho Jaxa said all those who are drinking the hand sanitizers may fall sick, be in a coma for days or die after consuming the dangerous substance.
Traditional leaders have vowed to kickstart educational campaigns around the issue.
She added that hand sanitizers contain raw and dangerous alcohol and urged traditional leaders to educate communities about the consequences of drinking hand sanitizers.
Sale of alcohol has been suspended during this period of the nationwide lockdown.
